Timber Cove Heritage
Timber Cove overlooks the Pacific Ocean on the Sonoma coast, ninety miles north of San Francisco. It has a rich history and perhaps the most fascinating were the Russians. In the spring of 1809, a Russian ship named “Kodiak” found its way to the shores of Timber Cove. Her maiden voyage set sail with 40 countrymen and 150 Aleuts. Flying the Czar’s flag, they landed in Bodega Bay only to find a confrontation with the Spaniards.

They withdrew from Bodega Bay and made a treaty with the Pomo Indians. Trading three blankets, two axes, three hoes, some beads and a few other items the Russians bought the village of Mad-Shiu-Miu. Over the next several years they would build a Russian Style fort next to the ocean, the present site of Fort Ross.

The pioneers were seasoned ocean trappers. Exacting high prices for precious otter pelts, they were able to make a very comfortable life for themselves. Within the protection of their walls, they carried on much as they did in their homeland. They were highly educated and lived a most sophisticated lifestyle which might have been the most lavish in California at the time.

Their stay lasted 32 years, and in 1841 Czar Nicholas retreated from the shores of Timber Cove. Today Timber Cove still has the dramatic beauty of ocean living and all the precious wildlife that existed during the day of the Russian Czars.
